The ease with which we can travel has made us all familiar with global flavours.

The tastes we experience as we roam distant shores become the soundtrack we play when conjuring up memories of fondly-remembered city breaks, family holidays and escapes from the routine of our busy lives.

Whilst ‘local’ is an important part of a delicatessen’s offering, the shelves also need to provide space for more exotic flavours. In the search for the very best examples of those familiar continental taste sensations, we often rely on those more experienced than ourselves to put names to flavours, to match products to our fading memories.

At The High Street Delicatessen we draw heavily on the experience – and willingness to share it – of Ultracomida, the Wales-based delicatessen business which lost its heart to Spain and all the tastes and flavours which that wonderful culture has given us.

Ultracomida has delicatessen shops in Aberystwyth and Narberth and it has recently added a third venue, the Curado tapas bar in Cardiff, which also has an excellent deli offering. There is a heartfelt thread of sharing at the core of the business; cheese and charcuterie samples are willingly and genuinely offered, large sharing tables encourage communal dining and those unexpected connections and conversations that emerge from proximity. You eat and drink what is stocked, a philosophy that chimes perfectly with ours.

The wine list is inspirational … our House wines are from Lopez de Haro, a rounded but lively temperanillo, an elegant Rioja Blanco and a flavoursome, dry Rosado for the Summer months. Bodegas Muga offers a range of outstanding wines; the Reserva has been extensively taste-tested by Mr and Mrs Deli whilst the Muga Cava is especially deli-cious.

Olives, snacking garlic, roasted maize … Manchego, Peralzola and Idiazabal on the cheese counter … continental craft beers – Er Boqueron, Toro and Socarrado … sweet and savoury tortas … and (as declared by an 8-year old customer) “the best hot chocolate in the world” … sweet or savoury, Ultracomida has us all covered!
