Coffee Break: Providero (Llandudno Junction)

There is something special about a small food or drink business run out of a vintage van

I defy even the hardest of hearts not to be warmed by the sight of a classic Citroen HY van in personalised livery … there’s a curiosity value and a heart-warming nod to the past in this particular style statement, a romance of the road tied to the endeavour of small business start-ups

But it is not a bed of roses, as Jon Hughes of Providero found out. There is no question the van looked amazing and his mission to bring ” … the finest loose leaf teas and gourmet coffees to North Wales …” attracted a great following

However, with his beautiful Citroen off the road for extended periods and the ongoing challenge of overcoming restrictions on where it could be parked to trade, Jon turned to Kickstarter to raise the funds for a more permanent home. The result … a small but perfectly formed coffee shop in Llandudno Junction, a North Wales town which is suddenly attracting some great new businesses

So this ‘Coffee Break’ will be taken in the new permanent home of Providero (with an indulgent and respectful nod to an elegant Citroen HY van, the shop’s forerunner, which will now be seen in Wales at festivals and one-off events)

When Mrs Deli and I turn up on a post-Bank Holiday Tuesday, the greeting is warm, the coffee stellar and the delicious looking selection of homemade cakes only resisted because of the lingering residual effects of a huge picnic lunch

No messing with the coffee, a mellow blend of South American beans, which had just enough bitterness to give the tastebuds something to dwell on … fab-luss, as we say here in Wales!

Service … well, top drawer. Jon has a Tuesday off (seems to me he probably deserves it having got this little gem off the ground); but the home team of Jake and Emma epitomised the ethos set out in the Kickstarter notes, which looked to:

“… find the right people, who will view brewing coffee and tea and excellent customer service as something that is a valuable service to their community …”

What we found was enthusiasm and a warm engagement with customers; we were made to feel one of the family … that seems to me to be what The High Street Delicatessen wants from a favourite coffee shop and what we plan to offer too!

Hi Catherine – sorry, just seen this. The awesome Providero is the excellent work of Jon Hughes and his team. Looking at their Instagram feed ‘ProvideroLife’ all looks as though it is going well in the new Llandudno coffee shop! Actually, me and Mrs Deli are heading up there for a visit this Sunday on our #dayoffday
